Phonebanks to Elect Arizona Climate Champions

The Council co-hosted our second and third phone banks to successfully elect candidates to the Salt River Project Board! Alongside Jane Fonda, Lead Locally, Jane Fonda Climate PAC, and Third Act, we turned out the vote for clean, affordable energy candidates running for one of the country's largest publicly-owned utilities. Council Youth Engagement Director Paul Presendieu, Chair Michelle Deatrick, and Council members all joined in to make calls.

The future of energy, water, and data projects across Arizona will be shaped by the outcome of this election, and the Council was proud to stand with these incredible candidates in support of their campaigns.

And the work paid off: on April 7, the Clean Energy Team won five of seven contested district board seats, delivering an 8-6 pro-renewable majority on the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District board. Turnout more than quadrupled compared to 2024 — roughly 36,000 ballots cast versus about 7,500 — despite the Clean Energy slate being outspent roughly 10-to-1 by Turning Point Action and other anti-clean-energy groups. The new majority positions SRP, which serves around 1.1 million Phoenix-area customers, to move toward more affordable, long-term clean energy solutions in its rate-setting and power generation decisions.
