Chair Deatrick Keynotes Southern Nevada Extreme Heat Summit

April 29 | Las Vegas, Nevada

Council Chair Michelle Deatrick will serve as Keynote Speaker at the Southern Nevada Extreme Heat Summit, a major regional convening bringing together elected officials, public health experts, community leaders, and national voices to tackle one of the most urgent consequences of the climate crisis: extreme heat.

Nevada is on the #ClimateFrontlines. As the climate crisis worsens, extreme heat events are growing more frequent and more deadly, with devastating consequences for public health, vulnerable communities, and infrastructure. This summit will confront those challenges head-on — exploring what regions across the country are doing to build resilience, protect lives, and design sustainable solutions for a warming world.

Chair Deatrick will deliver the opening keynote alongside Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom. The full day of panels, breakout sessions, and community-driven conversation features a powerful lineup of lawmakers, researchers, health professionals, and advocates, including:

Governing for Heat: NV Assemblywoman Cinthia Moore, NV Senator Dina Neal, Marci Henson, Marco N. Velotta, and Tory Jackson.

Designing for Survival, Dignity & Equity: NV Assemblywoman Erica Mosca, Jackie Spicer, Dr. Catrina Grigsby-Thedford, Louis Lacey, Giselle Gomez, and Julia Hubbard.

Learning from Regional Leaders: Moderated by KLAS-CBS Channel 8 Reporter Tedd Florendo, with David Hondula, Director of Heat Response and Mitigation for the City of Phoenix, and Lilliana Cardenas, Community Resilience Operations Manager at RISE — Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Extreme Heat as a Public Health Emergency: Sara Evans, Dr. Joanne Leovy, Dr. Louisa Messenger, and Melanie Rouse.

Designing for 100 Degree Days: Ariel Choinard, Cheryl Nagy, Heather Lafferty, Lauren Boitel, and Scott Kaufmann.

The Summit is hosted by Southern Nevada Strong and community partners, and takes place at the AC Hotel Las Vegas Symphony Park, 330 S. Grand Central Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89106

From the Climate Frontlines to Leadership: Chair Deatrick on Women, Girls, and the Climate Crisis at the American Association of University Women’s Spring Banquet

May 20 | Check-in: 11:15 AM | Program: 12:00 PM

Women and girls are among those most disproportionately harmed by the climate crisis — and they are also among its most powerful and visionary leaders. Council Chair Michelle Deatrick will bring that message to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Spring Banquet, speaking on the urgent intersection of gender equity and climate justice, and the vital role of women's leadership in building a livable future.

The Spring Banquet is one of AAUW's signature annual celebrations, honoring scholars, inducting a new Board of Officers, and recognizing a new Named Gift Honoree. Chair Deatrick — writer, environmental activist, farmer, and national climate leader — will address the gathering as featured speaker.

Advance reservations and prepayment are required.
