Council on the Road: Chair in Texas for Texas Environmental Dems

Chair Deatrick spoke at a packed, standing-room-only gathering of the Texas Environmental Democrats (TED), held at the Texas Democratic Convention in Corpus Christi. TED President Daniel Ayala led the event, where the Chair appeared alongside Taft Mayor and climate champion Elida Castillo. She also addressed a meeting of the Texas Sierra Club and met with state environmental leaders, candidates, and advocates.

The setting drove the point home. Corpus Christi is in the middle of a historic water crisis, and much of Texas is gripped by drought deepened by the climate crisis, with water restricted and rationed in many communities. At the same time, more new hyperscale AI data centers are planned in Texas than in any other state — over 200 and counting, after Republican Gov. Abbott rolled out the welcome mat. These massive facilities will strain an already fragile water supply and drive up utility rates for ordinary Texans.

With the midterms ahead, gatherings like this are where the work gets done: organizing, comparing notes, and building the coalition to stand up to polluters.

Thank you to the Texas Environmental Democrats for hosting such a wonderful meeting.
