Michelle Deatrick Re-Elected Chair Of The DNC Council On The Environment And Climate Crisis

After Unanimous Vote At Annual DNC Meeting, Deatrick Promises To Help Democrats Run On And Win On Climate

On Friday, at the annual DNC meeting in Washington DC, Michelle Deatrick was re-elected chair of the DNC Council on the Environment and Climate Crisis. Deatrick, the founder and first-ever chair of the Council, was re-elected by unanimous vote.

At the same meeting David Green was re-elected Vice Chair and Paul Presendieu was elected Youth Director. The Council, the newest of all the DNC Councils, was created just over two years ago, and was praised at the meeting by DNC Chair Jaime Harrison for its effectiveness and outsized role in helping the party.

“Both our party and our planet are at a critical moment,” said Deatrick following the election. “A moment where the future of our democracy, country and our planet is at stake. For Democrats, winning in November is beyond critical. Turning over control of Congress to the Republicans would have disastrous consequences for our country. These are not normal times and this is not your grandparent’s Republican Party. It is a party that has embraced extremism and the politics of hate. It has rewarded those who led a deadly coup attempt and is already planning to undermine our next election. And it is the party of climate denial, delay and diversion. The climate crisis is not coming. It is here now. We see it all around us. Wildfires out west. Historic flooding in the midwest. Stronger and more dangerous hurricanes. It is already impacting nearly everything in our lives. This is a moment that demands we go all in to save both – our country and our planet. Which is exactly what our Council will do over the coming months and years.”

Deatrick committed the Council to:

  • Working closely with the Biden-Harris Administration and the DNC to support and amplify bold climate and environmental justice policy.

  • Ensuring that the environment is a winning issue for Democrats, and use it to increase turnout and engagement.

  • Continuing to support the establishment and growth of Democratic environmental caucuses and initiatives in the more than 40 states and territories that lack them, and build the connective tissue among them.

  • Strengthening Democratic outreach to the grassroots, grasstops and intersectional demographics for whom climate and environment are key issues.

  • Working tirelessly to elect Democrats, uphold our values, and support bold climate and environmental justice policy.
